Behavior Settings
Overview
Behavior settings control how Ultimate Social Proof fetches and displays toast notifications to your visitors. These settings help you balance social proof visibility with user experience, ensuring your notifications feel authentic and non-intrusive.
You'll find these settings in the Shopify Theme Editor under App embeds > Ultimate Social Proof, in the Behavior section.
Event Lookback Period (Max Age Hours)
This setting determines how far back Ultimate Social Proof looks when fetching recent orders, add-to-cart events, and other activity to display in your toasts.
- Range: 6 to 72 hours
- Default: 48 hours
- Increments: 6-hour steps
How to choose the right value
Shorter lookback (6-24 hours) works best for high-traffic stores with frequent orders. This ensures all displayed activity is very recent, making your social proof feel timely and relevant.
Longer lookback (48-72 hours) is ideal for stores with moderate traffic or fewer daily orders. Extending the window ensures you have enough events to show, preventing gaps in your social proof.
Tip: If your toasts rarely appear, try increasing this value. If you want only the freshest activity, decrease it.
Max Toasts Per Session
This setting caps how many toast notifications a single visitor sees during their browsing session.
- Range: 1 to 12 toasts
- Default: 6 toasts
Plan availability
Free and Basic plans are fixed at 1 toast per session. This provides a taste of social proof without overwhelming visitors.
Pro plan unlocks the full range, allowing up to 12 toasts per session. This gives you complete control over notification frequency.
Recommendations
- Conservative (1-3 toasts): Good for minimalist stores or cautious testing
- Balanced (4-6 toasts): Provides consistent social proof without fatigue
- Aggressive (7-12 toasts): Maximizes visibility for high-intent pages like product or cart pages
Quiet Mode
Quiet mode automatically reduces toast frequency when your store has limited recent activity.
- Default: Enabled
Why use quiet mode?
When enabled, quiet mode prevents the same few events from being shown repeatedly. This is especially helpful for:
- New stores building their customer base
- Stores during slow periods
- Products with infrequent purchases
Quiet mode ensures your social proof remains credible by avoiding repetitive notifications that might seem artificial to visitors.
When to disable
If your store has consistent, high activity and you want maximum toast visibility, you can disable quiet mode. This ensures toasts appear at their normal rate regardless of data volume.
Minimum Viewers Threshold
This setting controls when visitor count fallback toasts appear (e.g., "5 people are viewing this").
- Default: 3 viewers
How it works
When Ultimate Social Proof can't find recent order or cart activity for a product, it can fall back to showing live visitor counts. This setting prevents low numbers from appearing, which could have the opposite of the intended effect.
For example, with a minimum of 3:
- 2 viewers = no toast shown
- 3+ viewers = visitor toast appears
Setting the right threshold
Lower threshold (1-2): Shows visitor toasts more often, even with minimal traffic. Use this for niche products or low-traffic stores where any activity is meaningful.
Higher threshold (5+): Only shows visitor toasts when there's significant interest. This ensures the numbers displayed feel impressive to potential buyers.
Best Practices
- Start with defaults - The default settings work well for most stores
- Adjust based on traffic - High-traffic stores can use shorter lookback periods; lower-traffic stores benefit from longer ones
- Keep quiet mode enabled - Unless you have very consistent activity, quiet mode prevents repetitive toasts
- Test and iterate - Monitor how visitors respond and adjust settings accordingly
