What is Toast Cycling?

Toast cycling is a powerful Pro-exclusive feature that displays multiple social proof notifications per visitor session instead of just one. Rather than showing a single toast and stopping, your store can continue building trust and urgency by cycling through recent orders, cart additions, and live viewer data throughout the customer's browsing experience.

Think of it this way: a single notification is a gentle nudge, but a well-paced series of notifications creates a compelling narrative of store activity that converts browsers into buyers.

How Toast Cycling Works

When toast cycling is enabled, Ultimate Social Proof will show multiple toasts during a visitor's session based on your configured settings. Each toast displays fresh social proof data—recent purchases, items added to cart, or current viewers—keeping the sense of activity and urgency alive as customers explore your store.

Without toast cycling (on Free, Basic, and Plus plans), visitors see only one toast per session. This is the default behavior and works well for smaller stores, but high-traffic stores benefit greatly from the extended engagement that cycling provides.

Configuring Toast Cycling

Once you've upgraded to the Pro plan, you'll have access to two key settings in the theme customizer:

Max Toasts Per Session (1-12)

This setting controls how many toasts a single visitor will see before the notifications stop for their session. The default is 6 toasts, but you can adjust anywhere from 1 to 12 based on your store's activity level and customer experience goals.

  • Lower values (1-4): Best for stores that want subtle, less frequent social proof
  • Medium values (5-8): Balanced approach that works well for most stores
  • Higher values (9-12): Ideal for high-traffic stores with lots of activity to showcase

Frequency (Pacing Between Toasts)

Control how quickly toasts appear with three pacing options:

  • Subtle: Few toasts per minute—gentle and unobtrusive
  • Balanced: The default setting, providing steady social proof without overwhelming visitors
  • Aggressive: Many toasts per minute—creates maximum urgency for flash sales or limited-time offers

We recommend starting with "Balanced" and adjusting based on your conversion data and customer feedback.

Why Toast Cycling is Pro-Only

Toast cycling is reserved for Pro plan subscribers for good reason: it requires careful implementation to avoid notification fatigue.

Showing too many notifications too quickly can annoy visitors and hurt conversions rather than help them. The Pro plan includes toast cycling because Pro merchants typically have:

  • Higher traffic volumes that generate enough real activity to justify multiple toasts
  • More sophisticated conversion optimization strategies
  • The analytics history (365 days on Pro) to properly measure the impact of cycling settings

By limiting this feature to Pro, we ensure merchants have the tools and data they need to use toast cycling effectively.

How to Unlock Toast Cycling

Ready to take your social proof to the next level? Here's how to upgrade:

  1. Open the Ultimate Social Proof app in your Shopify admin
  2. Navigate to Settings and select Plan & Billing
  3. Choose the Pro plan to unlock toast cycling and all other premium features
  4. Once upgraded, open your theme customizer and configure your toast cycling settings

The Pro plan also includes 365 days of analytics history, advanced inline widgets, and the ability to hide the "Powered by" badge—giving you complete control over your social proof experience.

Best Practices for Toast Cycling

  • Start conservative: Begin with 4-6 toasts per session and the "Balanced" frequency, then adjust based on results
  • Enable Quiet Mode: This automatically reduces toasts when your store has sparse data, preventing repetitive notifications
  • Monitor your analytics: Watch your conversion rates after enabling cycling to find the sweet spot for your audience
  • Consider your products: High-consideration purchases (expensive items) may benefit from fewer, more impactful toasts, while impulse buys can handle more aggressive pacing
